Active vs Passive Modalities
Everyone loves to get a massage. Massages can help to temporarily relieve pain, but exercise is the primary way to make changes long-term.
Kinesiology used in conjunction with Registered Massage Therapy can be an effective way to address pain, discomfort, and restriction. While our Massage Therapists do administer self-care and exercise techniques, they may be limited in with how much they can give.
That’s where our Kinesiologists can step in and focus their attention on the types of movements that can serve you best.
We need to ensure all patients are receiving both passive (RMT) and active (Kinesiology/exercise) modalities in their recovery to promote better outcomes. This is why Kinesiology is so important to our approach here at Evolve!

our Unique process
Here at Evolve, we take a holistic approach with our unique process. The body is complex, but we will do our best to break down and make things simple.
We understand everyone comes in with a unique set of circumstances that can influence the issues you are having. We ensure that your assessment and exercise programs are tailored specifically to you and your unique set of circumstances.
Step 1: Assessment
Assessment can take many forms. Our Kinesiologists will typically assess your joint range of motions in the affected areas, but likely surrounding areas as well, in order to get more information. While joint range of motion is an important assessment, we believe looking at more dynamic motion such as running or walking can give us more information into how your body likes to organize movement. Your Kinesiologist may also assess posture to see what areas may be limiting motion. Your posture may help us to start to identify your body’s preferences for moving, so we can start to explore movement outside of those preferences.
Assessment is something that takes place at the beginning, but also happens throughout your session. How you perform exercises and movement gives your Kinesiologist important feedback that can help you to perform better and minimize discomfort. This feedback is very valuable and will help your Kinesiologist identify a more specific approach.

Step 2: Specific, Corrective Exercise
Based on your assessment and goals, we will choose the most relevant exercises for you. Our first step with exercise is to identify the most specific intervention required for you. That may mean finding new movement strategies that positively support the body while using pain as a guide through motion. Corrective exercise is designed to be a challenging or adequate stimulus to the body to create awareness. We may identify certain parts of movement that can be addressed directly. The exercises shown in this stage may be tailored to more symptomatic relief to help to manage any pain and discomfort, but they can also be helpful for ultimately moving more holistically.
Exercise prescription will vary greatly depending on your goals. Based on your assessment, we will choose the most relevant exercises for you. For example, those experiencing pain with movement will be taught new movement strategies that positively support your body. While pain may be used as a guide, we may not need to feel pain at all if we can find a realistic and relevant way for you to move. Either way, our goal is to provide you with a challenge so your body can adapt and grow more resilient. And in the long run, we want to teach you more about your body so you can take your health into your own hands, and become empowered.
Step 3: Holistic Movement
After identifying strategies for specific, corrective exercise, the goal is to put all pieces together to start moving holistically. Moving holistically means using the entire body to move in a coordinating fashion. The body can understand relationships between structures better when we move them together. Corrective exercise has its place but is not the end goal. Movement and exercise is going to make the biggest changes for you in your journey. Understanding how to coordinate movement will help to make you more confident in your body!
What does “moving the body as one” look like? Movement may be conscious – you think about how you are moving. But, it can also be subconscious – you are moving but not thinking deeply about how to achieve that motion. For example, if you are learning how to squat you may be thinking about how different parts of the body should be working together. Alternatively, if you are going for a walk or a jog, you may just perform the movement without thinking specifically about how you are doing it.
Ultimately, when acquiring new skills and movements, we typically have to think more about the movement – a conscious state. Ideally, the end goal is to perform these new motions subconsciously. These motions may resemble squatting, hinging, lunging, rotating, bending, pushing, pulling, throwing, dancing and more! Being able to move more subconsciously can be liberating! Maybe we think a lot about how we are moving because we are in pain. Movement liberation comes from true expression without internal judgement. We look forward to helping you through this journey!
