Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture can assist with easing muscle pain, relieving tension, reduce stress, improving sleep, and promoting relaxation throughout your entire body. It may also help to reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, balance the nervous system, and more!

The practice of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine helps to restore and balance the body’s energy known as “qi” (pronounced chee). Any blockages or altered flow of qi can result in symptoms in the body according to this practice.

At Evolve Vancouver, our practitioners will work with you to determine a treatment plan specific to your complaint.

Acupuncture treatment typically is covered through most extended health benefit plans, and ICBC. Most plans reset on January 1st.

Acupuncture Treatments

At Evolve Vancouver, we provide a variety of holistic treatment options to suit your needs. The main treatment modalities performed at Evolve are Traditional Acupuncture, Cupping, Gua Sha, and Tui Na.

Traditional Acupuncture

Traditional Acupuncture involves using thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body to promote healing. It is commonly used for pain management, stress relief, relaxation, improving circulation, energy flow, digestive issues, insomnia, and fertility issues.

Many individuals trying Acupuncture for the first time may be wondering what it feels like. In general, Acupuncture feels relaxing to most patients. Some individuals may feel a quick pinch or prick while the needle is inserted.

The needle is typically left in place for 15-30 minutes. It may feel like a dull ache in the beginning which slowly fades away as you settle into the treatment.

Patients may feel relaxed, tired, or even energized after the treatment, but generally these effects are temporary. There may also be changes to your physical symptoms post-treatment.

Cupping

Cupping can be used for many similar conditions as Acupuncture, but it uses a different method of placing cups on the skin to create a suction effect. It can be used for pain management, circulation, reducing inflammation, relaxation, decreasing tension, and more.

When the cups are attached to the skin during treatment, you may feel a strong suction, tension, or pressure. It’s typically not painful, but can feel intense especially around tight areas of skin and muscle.

Post-treatment, patients may experience some soreness, and the areas of cupping may show red or purple marks which fade over time.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese technique that involves scraping a smooth tool over the skin to relieve tension, promote circulation and lymphatic and energy flow. When used on the body, it can assist to improve muscle tension, mobility, and overall health. In some cases it may even help to support the immune system!

Gua Sha can be applied at a variety of intensities ranging from soothing to intense, depending on the pressure, your sensitivity and the type of symptoms. It may feel relaxing in certain areas, while more intense over areas of tension or pain.

Like Cupping, this treatment may leave visible red or purple marks which indicate increased circulation. These marks typically fade over time.

Tui Na

Tui Na (“twee nah”) is a type of traditional Chinese therapeutic massage and one of the main four branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine. When Tui Na is applied, the therapist applies pressure, rubbing, and kneading of the muscles and joints of the body to restore energy (Qi), circulation, and to treat musculoskeletal and internal conditions.

This type of massage stimulates acupressure points and the flow of energy in the body. Typically the application of this technique is firm to deep, and is deeper compared to a common relaxation or Swedish massage treatment.

Patients may feel sore afterwards, and they may report feeling less muscle tension, improved flexibility, or other positive effects. Soreness typically subsides over time.
